DESCRIPTION
Plant Profile
Oryza sativa, commonly known as rice, is an annual grass plant grown mainly for its edible grains. The plant usually grows between half a meter to nearly two meters tall, depending on the variety and growing conditions. It has a straight, hollow stem with long, narrow green leaves. Rice flowers are very small and grow in loose clusters at the top of the plant. These flowers later develop into grains that are rich in starch. Rice is believed to have been first cultivated in India and nearby regions. Today, it is grown widely across Asia and many other warm parts of the world as a major food crop.
Healthcare Perspective
Rice has long been valued in traditional healthcare because it is mild, nourishing, and easy to digest. In Ayurveda, certain rice varieties are considered cooling and strengthening for the body. Soft-cooked rice and rice water are commonly given during illness, especially in cases of fever, diarrhea, or weakness. Rice helps calm the digestive system and provides energy without putting stress on the stomach. Rice water is often used to reduce dehydration and body heat. Because of these qualities, rice is usually recommended as the first solid food during recovery after sickness.
Phytochemical Composition
Rice grains mainly contain carbohydrates, which supply energy. They also provide small amounts of proteins and fats. The outer layers of the grain, especially in unpolished rice, contain beneficial natural compounds. Rice bran is rich in oils and antioxidant substances. Some rice types, such as red and black rice, contain natural pigments that have protective properties. Rice also provides minerals like iron, magnesium, and phosphorus in moderate amounts.
Precautions
Do not use if you have abdominal pain or diarrhea. Consult a healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking any medications. Discontinue use if diarrhea or loose stools occur. Do not exceed the recommended dose. Not intended for long-term use.
