Plant Profile
Coriandrum sativum, or Coriander, is an upright herb that grows up to 50 cm tall. It has feathery green leaves but is mainly grown for its seeds, which are small, round, and ribbed, about 3–5 mm in size. The seeds start green with a strong smell and turn tan or golden-brown when ripe. Ripe seeds have a sweet, nutty, and citrus-like smell because of a chemical called linalool. Coriander is native to the Mediterranean and Near East and has been used for over 8,000 years. Today, it grows all over the world, and India is the biggest producer.

Healthcare Perspective
In Ayurveda, coriander seeds are called Dhanyaka. They help balance all three doshas, especially cooling Pitta. Coriander helps digestion and can reduce stomach inflammation and acidity. It is often made into a cold drink to help with burning sensations, urinary problems, and thirst. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, coriander seeds reduce gas, support the kidneys, and calm the nervous system. Studies also show coriander may help keep cholesterol healthy and remove harmful metals from the body.

Phytochemical Composition
Coriander seeds contain essential oils, mainly d-linalool, which gives them their aroma and antimicrobial effects. They also have other chemicals like alpha-pinene, gamma-terpinene, limonene, and p-cymene, along with fatty acids like petroselinic acid. The seeds are rich in antioxidants such as quercetin and kaempferol and contain minerals like iron, magnesium, and manganese. These compounds make coriander seeds healthy and useful in traditional medicine.
