Plant Profile
Elettaria cardamomum is often called as the "Queen of Spices". It is a robust, herbaceous perennial belonging to the family Zingiberaceae. The plant has large, clumping pseudostems that grow 2–5 meters tall. It is adorned with long, lance-shaped, evergreen leaves. Its commercially prized fruits are small, trilocular capsules—typically 1–2 cm long. These capsules are spindle-shaped and pale green to yellow in color. These pods contain 15–20 small, dark seeds. They are highly aromatic and have a warm, camphoraceous flavor. Historically and naturally, Elettaria cardamomum is native to the humid, evergreen monsoon forests of the Western Ghats in Southern India. Today, it is cultivated in the Indian states of Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. It has been introduced to other tropical regions globally.
Healthcare Perspective
In traditional healthcare systems, Elettaria cardamomum (known as Ela in Sanskrit) is highly regarded for its multifaceted therapeutic profile. It is especially important in Ayurveda and Siddha medicine. In Ayurveda, it is classified as tridoshic. This means it is uniquely capable of balancing all three bodily humors (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha). It is especially valued for clearing congestion related to Kapha in the lungs and stomach. Traditional practitioners utilize the seeds primarily to stimulate Agni (digestive fire). It facilitates the breakdown of food and the reduction of Ama (undigested toxic remains). It also alleviates bloating, flatulence, and acidity. Its aromatic oils, especially 1,8-cineole, help with digestion. They also act as a natural expectorant. In traditional respiratory care, these oils are combined with honey. They help soothe coughs, bronchitis, and asthma by loosening mucus. In the diverse folk traditions, chewing the pods is a ubiquitous practice for maintaining oral hygiene and neutralizing halitosis. This practice works because the pods have natural antimicrobial properties.
Phytochemical Composition
Elettaria cardamomum has a complex chemical makeup. Its volatile oil content usually makes up to 2% to 8% of the seed's weight. The key active ingredients are oxygenated monoterpenes. One is alpha-terpinyl acetate, which gives the spice its woody, floral aroma. Another is 1,8-cineole, or eucalyptol, which adds a cool, camphorous scent. These two compounds often account for up to 80% of the total essential oil profile. Other key bioactive compounds are linalool, limonene, sabinene, and alpha-terpineol. These compounds contribute to the plant's antimicrobial and antispasmodic effects. The fruit capsules have more than just volatile oils. They also contain non-volatile compounds. These include phenolic acids, like gallic and caffeic. They also include flavonoids, such as quercetin and kaempferol. Fixed oils are present too. Together, these compounds play a collective role in the herb's antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities."
