Plant Profile
Cinnamomum zeylanicum, or True Cinnamon, is a bushy evergreen tree from the Lauraceae family. It usually grows 10 to 15 meters tall in the wild. Its thick, leathery leaves start as bright reddish-bronze and turn dark green with clear veins as they mature. The bark is taken from the inner stems. When dried, it naturally curls into thin, brittle, tan-colored quills. These quills are known for their sweet, mild aroma and flavor, which is finer than the stronger Cassia cinnamon. This species is native to Sri Lanka, but it also grows in the Malabar Coast of India and parts of Myanmar.
Healthcare Perspective
In traditional medicine, Cinnamomum zeylanicum, called Dalchini in Ayurveda, is a warming herb with pungent, bitter, and sweet tastes. It is used to balance Vata and Kapha doshas. The bark helps digestion, reducing bloating, gas, and low appetite. It is also used in Ayurvedic formulas like Sitopaladi Churna and Trijataka to support respiratory health, clear congestion, and soothe sore throats.
Phytochemical Composition
The bark has many active compounds. The main one is trans-cinnamaldehyde, which makes up 60–80% of the essential oil and gives cinnamon its warm flavor, aroma, and antimicrobial properties. Eugenol (4–10%) adds antiseptic and soothing effects. Other compounds include linalool, cinnamic acid, cinnamyl acetate, and caryophyllene. The bark also has polyphenols like proanthocyanidins and catechins, which help with inflammation and oxidative damage. Compared to other cinnamon types, True Cinnamon has very low coumarin, making it safer for daily use.
