DESCRIPTION

Plant Profile
Pluchea lanceolata, commonly known as Rasna, is a small, tough perennial plant that grows close to the ground. It generally grows to around 30–60 cm in height. The plant has firm, woody stems and thick leaves that grow directly from the stem without a stalk. These leaves are narrow, leathery, and covered with fine, soft hairs that give them a slightly fuzzy feel. Rasna produces small flowers that grow in clusters. The flowers are usually light purple to lilac in color. This plant is mainly found in dry and semi-dry regions. In India, it grows widely across the plains of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.

Healthcare Perspective
In Ayurveda, Rasna is especially valued for calming Vata dosha, which is linked to movement, pain, and nerve activity. It is commonly used in traditional oils, decoctions, and powders meant to support joint comfort and mobility. Rasna is often included in remedies for stiffness, swelling, and general body aches. Apart from joint care, traditional practices also use the leaves to support digestion and the body’s natural response to inflammation. In some regional systems, Rasna is considered a mild nervine tonic and is believed to help maintain overall strength and balance in the body.

Phytochemical Composition
Pluchea lanceolata contains several natural compounds that support its traditional uses. The leaves are rich in flavonoids such as quercetin and isorhamnetin, which are known for their antioxidant activity. The plant also contains triterpenoids like taraxasterol, along with plant sterols such as beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol. In addition, it has glycosides, phenolic acids, and certain fatty acids. Together, these compounds form the natural chemical base behind Rasna’s long-standing role in traditional herbal applications.
