Plant Profile
Hydnocarpus wightianus is an evergreen tree mainly valued for the oil found in its seeds. The tree grows to a medium height and develops broad, thick leaves that stay green throughout the year. It produces round fruits with a hard outer shell. Inside these fruits are several large seeds, which are the source of chaulmoogra oil. The seeds are collected when the fruits fully mature. After harvesting, they are cleaned and dried before oil extraction. Traditionally, the oil is obtained by slow pressing or gentle heating methods. This helps retain the natural character of the oil. The extracted oil is thick in texture and usually pale yellow to light brown in color, with a strong earthy smell. Hydnocarpus wightianus is native to tropical forest regions of South and Southeast Asia. In India, it has traditionally grown in the Western Ghats and parts of the northeastern states. Due to its historical importance, the tree has also been cultivated in controlled plantations for seed collection.

Healthcare Perspective
Chaulmoogra seed oil has a long history of traditional use, especially for external skin care. In earlier medical systems, it was mainly used for chronic skin conditions that did not respond easily to other remedies. The oil was valued for deep, long-term skin support rather than quick results. Traditionally, the oil was applied directly to the skin or mixed with milder oils to reduce irritation. Applications were slow and regular, often continued for months. This reflected the belief that stubborn skin concerns need patience and consistency. In some practices, the oil was also used in herbal ointments and medicated pastes. Because of its strong nature, chaulmoogra oil was never treated as a daily-use oil. It was used carefully and usually under guidance. Over time, internal use declined due to tolerance issues, but external use continued in traditional skin-focused care. Today, chaulmoogra oil is mainly used in specialized herbal and cosmetic preparations. It is respected more for its historical role and unique properties than for routine applications.

Phytochemical Profile
Chaulmoogra seed oil has a very distinct chemical makeup. Unlike common plant oils, it contains rare cyclic fatty acids that are not widely found elsewhere. The most important of these are hydnocarpic acid, chaulmoogric acid, and gorlic acid. These fatty acids give the oil its thick texture and slow absorption into the skin. Small amounts of oleic acid and palmitic acid are also present, which help improve spreadability. The oil also contains natural minor compounds that add stability and contribute to its strong aroma. Because of this unique fatty acid structure, chaulmoogra oil behaves differently from lighter oils. It stays on the skin longer and delivers prolonged contact. This unusual profile explains why the oil gained such importance in traditional skin care and why it still holds value in niche herbal applications today.
