Plant Profile
Elettaria cardamomum, commonly known as green cardamom, is a tall plant that grows year after year. It belongs to the ginger family and can grow 2 to 5 meters high. The plant has large green leaves and produces small yellowish-white flowers. These flowers later form small green pods. Inside each pod are many small black seeds, which have a strong, pleasant smell and a warm, slightly sweet taste. Green cardamom is native to the Western Ghats of South India, especially the area known as the Cardamom Hills. Today, it is widely grown in suitable tropical regions.
Healthcare Perspective
In traditional medicine, green cardamom is called Ela or Elaichi and is valued for its digestive and breathing benefits. In Ayurveda, it helps in balancing all three body energies: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Cardamom seeds are often used to improve digestion, reduce gas and bloating, and ease nausea. They are also helpful in clearing mucus from the lungs, making them useful for coughs, asthma, and sore throats. In Siddha medicine, cardamom is added to teas or steam treatments to help open the airways. Traditionally, people also chew cardamom seeds to freshen breath and keep the mouth clean.
Phytochemical Composition
Green cardamom seeds contain natural oils that give them their strong aroma and health benefits. The main compounds in these oils help relax the stomach muscles, fight germs, and support digestion. Cardamom also contains antioxidants, which protect the body from damage and reduce swelling. Other plant compounds in the seeds help explain why cardamom is used as a digestive aid, anti-inflammatory spice, and general health supporter.
