Nigella sativa, commonly known as black cumin or kalonji, is a small annual herb from the Ranunculaceae family. It usually grows 20 to 60 centimeters tall. The plant has finely divided, narrow leaves and delicate single flowers. These flowers are pale blue to white and have five to ten petals. The plant produces an inflated fruit capsule made up of three to seven joined sections. Each section contains many small, matte-black seeds with a strong, peppery aroma. These seeds are the main part used. Nigella sativa grows naturally in areas from Eastern Europe and Western Asia to Northern Africa.
