DESCRIPTION

Plant Profile
Nigella sativa, commonly known as black cumin or kalonji, is a small annual herb from the Ranunculaceae family. It usually grows 20 to 60 centimeters tall. The plant has finely divided, narrow leaves and delicate single flowers. These flowers are pale blue to white and have five to ten petals. The plant produces an inflated fruit capsule made up of three to seven joined sections. Each section contains many small, matte-black seeds with a strong, peppery aroma. These seeds are the main part used. Nigella sativa grows naturally in areas from Eastern Europe and Western Asia to Northern Africa. Because people have used it for centuries in food and medicine, it is now grown all over the world. It is especially common in South Asia and India.

Healthcare Perspective
In Ayurveda, Nigella sativa is known as Upakunchika. It is valued for its pungent (Katu) and bitter (Tikta) tastes and its warming (Ushna) nature. It is traditionally used to balance Kapha and Vata doshas. The seeds are often taken to stimulate digestion and improve appetite, helping with indigestion and abdominal bloating. Besides helping with digestion, Nigella sativa is used to improve breathing. It helps the body clear out mucus and supports the lungs when you have a stuffy nose or a cough. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the seeds are used to treat cold conditions in the body. In Siddha medicine, these seeds are highly valued for their healing powers. They are used to strengthen the body’s immune system and help new mothers produce more milk. Healers also use the seeds to treat various skin problems. The seeds are used both internally and as an oil applied to the skin.

Phytochemical Composition
The chemical makeup of Nigella sativa is mainly shaped by its rich volatile and fixed oils, which contain many active compounds. The most important of these is thymoquinone, a powerful substance found in high levels in the essential oil and well known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. Other key volatile components include p-cymene, carvacrol, thymol, nigellone (dithymoquinone), and alpha-pinene. The seeds also contain a high level of fixed oil, which is rich in essential fatty acids such as linoleic acid (omega-6) and oleic acid. In addition, Nigella sativa provides unique alkaloids like nigellidine, nigellicine, and nigellimine. The presence of saponins, especially alpha-hederin, along with various phenolic compounds, further adds to the plant’s wide range of biological activities.
