DESCRIPTION
Plant Profile
Ricinus communis is a fast-growing plant that grows as a tall herb or a semi-woody shrub. It has very large leaves that look like an open hand. These leaves are deeply cut and often show a red or purple shade. The plant forms round seed pods covered with soft spines. Inside the pods are shiny, patterned seeds that contain a large amount of oil. The plant originated in India and grows well in warm conditions. Because it adapts easily, it is now found in many tropical and subtropical regions. In India, Ricinus communis is commonly cultivated in Rajasthan.
Healthcare Perspective
In Ayurveda, Ricinus communis is called Eranda. It is mainly used to calm Vata dosha and is considered one of the strongest herbs for this purpose. The oil pressed from the seeds is widely known for its strong cleansing action. Traditionally, it is used in therapies called Virechana, which are meant to clear the digestive tract and support regular bowel movement. The plant is also used externally. The leaves and root bark are applied to the body to ease joint stiffness and skin irritation. In many traditional systems across Africa and Asia, parts of the plant are used as poultices or simple decoctions. These preparations are commonly used for swelling, pain, and mild inflammation.
Phytochemical Composition
The main active part of Ricinus communis is the oil found in its seeds. This oil contains a fatty acid called ricinoleic acid. It makes up nearly 90 percent of the oil and is responsible for most of its effects.
The seeds also contain ricin, which is a toxic protein, and another compound called ricinine. Ricin does not mix with oil, so it is not present in properly processed castor oil. Apart from the oil, the plant contains other natural compounds. These include flavonoids such as quercetin and rutin, along with steroids and phenolic substances. Together, these compounds explain the plant’s long history of use in traditional care.
Precautions
