DESCRIPTION
Plant Profile
Ocimum gratissimum seeds, commonly called Vana Tulsi seeds, are very small and round. When young, they are green. As they mature, they turn dark brown or nearly black. When soaked in water, the seeds swell and form a soft, jelly-like outer layer. This natural gel is often used in traditional drinks because it feels cooling and soothing. The plant grows well in warm climates. It is native to tropical regions, including large parts of India. It is commonly seen growing near homes, farms, and open lands.
Healthcare Perspective
In traditional health practices, Ocimum gratissimum is known for its calming and cleansing nature. In Ayurveda, it is used to support balance in the body, especially for Kapha and Vata. It is commonly taken during cough, cold, chest heaviness, and mild digestive discomfort. In West African traditions, the plant is called Scent Leaf. The seeds and leaves are soaked or boiled in water and taken to ease stomach upset, loose motion, and bloating. In Siddha practice, the plant is valued for its cooling effect. It is used for steam inhalation to clear the nose and head. The plant is also applied externally for minor skin concerns due to its cleansing nature.
Phytochemical Composition
The usefulness of Ocimum gratissimum comes from its natural aromatic oils and plant compounds. One of the main substances present is eugenol, which gives the plant a clove-like smell and supports its traditional cleansing use. The plant also contains other natural compounds such as thymol and beta-caryophyllene. These help protect the plants and support its traditional uses. Antioxidant compounds like rosmarinic acid and simple flavonoids are also present.
Together, these natural components explain why Ocimum gratissimum has been used for many years in traditional wellness systems.
