Plant Profile
Moringa oleifera is often called the “Miracle Tree” because almost every part of the plant is useful in some way. It is a fast-growing tree that can survive well in dry conditions. The leaves are soft and feathery, and the tree produces long pods filled with round seeds. Moringa originally comes from the sub-Himalayan areas of northern India. Over time, it proved easy to grow in hot and dry climates, which helped it spread to many regions of the world. In India, the tree is commonly cultivated in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and several southern states. Although the leaves are widely eaten as food, the seeds are especially important for oil production. Once the pods dry, the seeds are collected and pressed to extract moringa oil, also known as ben oil. This oil is known for being clear, stable, and very mild in smell. Because it comes directly from the seed, moringa oil is closely linked to the plant’s long history of traditional use.

Healthcare Perspective
In traditional practices, moringa oil has mostly been used on the body rather than taken internally. In Ayurveda, moringa is called Shigru and is described as sharp and warming in nature. Oil made from its seeds is considered nourishing, especially for people dealing with dryness or stiffness linked to Vata imbalance. The oil is commonly used for body massage to support relaxed muscles and comfortable joints. Its smooth texture allows it to spread easily without feeling heavy on the skin. Because of this, it is also popular in hair and scalp care. Many households have used moringa oil regularly to keep the scalp from becoming dry and to improve hair softness. In several regions, moringa oil has also been used as a base oil. Herbs are soaked into it and then applied to the skin, helping the plant extracts absorb better. Outside India, traditional communities in Africa and Southeast Asia have used the oil for skin care, especially in dry climates where protecting moisture is important.

Phytochemical Profile
Moringa oil is known for being stable and gentle, mainly because of its natural fat composition. A large part of the oil is made up of oleic acid, which gives it a smooth feel and helps prevent it from turning rancid quickly. This is one reason the oil stores well, even in warm conditions. The oil also contains smaller amounts of saturated fats like palmitic and stearic acid. These help form a light protective layer on the skin. Along with fats, moringa oil naturally contains antioxidants such as tocopherols and plant sterols. These slow down oxidation and support a longer shelf life. Small traces of plant-based phenolic compounds add to the oil’s protective qualities. Together, these natural components explain why moringa oil has remained a preferred choice for massage, skin care, and as a carrier oil—offering nourishment without feeling greasy.
