DESCRIPTION

Plant Profile
Medicago sativa, commonly known as Alfalfa or Lucerne, is a long-lived perennial legume best known for its three-part (trifoliate) leaves and deep, strong root system. Each leaf is made up of three narrow leaflets that are oblong to oval in shape and usually measure 10–45 mm in length. A unique feature of these leaflets is their small teeth near the tip. The leaves are highly nutritious and can adjust their position during the day to capture maximum sunlight for photosynthesis. Alfalfa is native to the warm, temperate regions of south-central Asia. Because of its high nutritional value and adaptability, it is now grown worldwide and is one of the most important crops used for livestock feed.
