DESCRIPTION

Plant Profile
Hedychium spicatum, also called Kapoor Kachri, is a strong, perennial herb from the ginger family. It has large, shiny green leaves and spikes of fragrant flowers. The most important part of the plant is its thick rhizome, which is yellowish-brown, fleshy, and smells like camphor, with a bitter taste. This plant naturally grows in the Himalayan region in subtropical and temperate areas at heights of 1,000 to 2,800 meters. In India, it is mainly grown in Uttarakhand and other hilly regions.

Healthcare Perspective
Kapoor Kachri has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. In Ayurveda, its rhizome is heating and bitter and helps balance Vata and Kapha doshas. It is used to support digestion, treat coughs, and improve respiratory health and is often included in remedies like Chyawanprash. In Tibetan and Chinese medicine, it is used to reduce inflammation, ease stomach problems, and improve circulation. Folk medicine uses the rhizome as a powder or tea to treat pain, indigestion, and coughs. Its aroma also makes it useful in hair oils and as a natural insect repellent. Modern studies show it has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, but it is still mainly valued as a warming and healing herb in traditional medicine.

Phytochemical Composition
The rhizome contains about 4% essential oil. The main active compound is 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol), which gives its camphor-like smell. Other compounds include beta-pinene, limonene, linalool, camphor, and alpha-cadinol, which add to its health benefits. It also contains hedychenone and 7-hydroxyhedychenone, which help reduce inflammation. The rhizome is rich in flavonoids, polyphenols, saponins, starch, resins, and organic acids, all of which help fight germs, reduce swelling, and support overall health.

Precautions
Do not use if you have abdominal pain or diarrhea. Consult a healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking any medications. Discontinue use if diarrhea or loose stools occur. Do not exceed the recommended dose. Not intended for long-term use.
