DESCRIPTION
Plant Profile
Gymnema sylvestre, also known as Gurmar, is a woody climbing plant that grows in warm regions of India and other parts of Asia. The plant has small, oval-shaped leaves that grow in pairs along the vine. These leaves are the most important part of the plant. Gurmar has been used in traditional medicine for a long time. Its name means “sugar destroyer” because it helps reduce the desire for sweet foods. The leaves are usually dried and taken as a powder or mixed into herbal drinks.
Healthcare Perspective
In Ayurveda, Gurmar has been used for more than 2,000 years. It is believed to help control blood sugar levels and is often used by people with diabetes. The leaves have a bitter taste and are thought to balance Kapha and Pitta in the body. Gurmar may also help with weight control by reducing sugar cravings. In traditional and tribal medicine, the leaf juice is used to support digestion and kidney health, while the root paste is sometimes applied to snakebite wounds.
Phytochemical Composition
Gurmar leaves contain natural substances that affect how the body tastes and absorbs sugar. The most important compounds are gymnemic acids, which can block sweet taste on the tongue for a short time. This makes sugary foods taste less sweet. The plant also contains a protein called gurmarin that helps reduce sweet taste further. Other compounds, such as flavonoids and plant sterols, help support metabolism and reduce inflammation. These natural chemicals explain why Gurmar is helpful for blood sugar control and overall health.
