Plant Profile
Commiphora wightii, commonly known as Guggul, is a slow-growing woody shrub or small tree from the Burseraceae family. It usually grows to a height of 3 to 4 meters. The plant has crooked and thorny branches with a rough appearance. These branches are covered with thin, silvery-gray bark. The bark peels off in small flakes and reveals a green layer beneath. Guggul is mainly valued for its oleo-gum-resin. This resin is a fragrant sap that ranges from yellowish to reddish-brown in color. It seeps out from cuts in the bark, mostly during the winter season. Guggul grows naturally in dry and semi-dry regions of the Indian subcontinent. It is most common in the rocky and sandy areas of Rajasthan and Gujarat. It is also found in smaller amounts in Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh.

Healthcare Perspective
In Ayurveda, Commiphora wightii is known as Guggulu and is considered a very important medicinal substance. It is described as a Yogavahi, meaning it helps carry the effects of other herbs deep into body tissues. Guggulu is mainly used for its scraping action, known as Lekhaniya. This action is believed to remove Ama, which refers to toxic waste from digestion. It is also thought to reduce Meda, or excess body fat, in the body. Because of its heating nature, Guggulu helps balance all three doshas, especially Vata and Kapha. For this reason, it is commonly used for conditions such as Amavata, which is linked to joint inflammation. It is also used for obesity and slow metabolism. Outside Ayurveda, Guggul resin is used in Siddha medicine. It is valued for its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic effects. It is often used for skin problems like acne, breathing congestion, and digestive issues. In the past, the resin was also burned as part of health rituals. This practice was believed to clean the air and reduce the spread of disease.

Phytochemical Composition
The main active compounds in Guggul resin are called guggulsterones. These are steroid-like compounds and include two forms, known as E and Z. Guggulsterones are known to affect the farnesoid X receptor. This receptor plays a role in controlling cholesterol levels in the body. In addition to these compounds, the resin contains several other active substances. These include diterpenoids such as cembrene-A and mukulol. It also contains triterpenoids like myrrhanol A and myrrhanone A. Other compounds include guggulsterols, labeled from I to VI. The resin also contains volatile oils that give it its scent. These oils include compounds such as myrcene and polymyrcene. The gum part of the resin contains polysaccharides and amino acids. The resin part contains lignans, including sesamin, along with flavonoids and esters. Together, these compounds explain the resin’s lipid-lowering, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects described in traditional medicine.
