Plant Profile
Cuminum cyminum, commonly known as cumin, is a small plant that grows for one growing season.
It typically reaches a height of 30 to 50 centimeters. The stem is slender and has a grey-green color. The leaves are very narrow and fine, almost resembling threads. The plant produce small white or light pink flowers. Cumin is primarily cultivated for its seeds, which are small, elongated, and have a brownish-grey color with distinct lines on their surface. Cumin originated in the Mediterranean region and Egypt. Currently, it is cultivated in many countries, with India being the world's largest producer of cumin.

Healthcare Perspective
In Ayurveda, cumin is referred to as Jeeraka, which means it aids in digestion.
It is often used to relieve gas, bloating, and stomach discomfort. Cumin helps warm the body and supports the proper digestion of food, especially when digestion is poor. In other traditional medicine systems, cumin is used to increase urine production, assist with breathing difficulties, and alleviate toothache. Many individuals drink water infused with cumin seeds to soothe the stomach. It is also given to nursing mothers to help improve milk production.

Phytochemical Composition
Cumin seeds contain natural oils that contribute to their strong aroma and flavor.
One key component is cuminaldehyde, which gives cumin its sharp taste and helps support healthy blood sugar levels. Cumin also contains compounds that help combat bacteria and improve digestion. The seeds are rich in antioxidants, which protect the body and help reduce inflammation. Due to these natural properties, cumin is beneficial for digestive health and overall wellness.
