Plant Profile
Crataeva nurvala, also known as Varuna, is a medium-sized tree. It can grow up to 15 meters tall. The tree loses its leaves during part of the year. It has three-part leaves and cream to greenish-white flowers with long stamens that have purple tips. The bark is the most useful part of the tree. It is rough and grey-brown on the outside and smooth and light-colored inside. Varuna grows naturally in India, especially in sub-Himalayan areas, central regions, and near rivers in the south.

Healthcare Perspective
In Ayurveda, Varuna is mainly used to help with kidney and bladder stones. It is often called a “stone-breaking” herb. The bark helps clean the urinary system and improve urine flow. It is used for problems like painful urination, prostate swelling, and urinary infections. Varuna also helps digestion, reduces gas, and supports body metabolism. In other traditional systems, the bark is used to reduce swelling and inflammation, especially in joints and lymph nodes.

Phytochemical Composition
Varuna bark contains many natural chemicals that help the body. One important compound is lupeol, which helps reduce inflammation. The bark also has flavonoids, which act as antioxidants and protect the body from damage. Other substances include plant sterols, saponins, and tannins. Together, these compounds help lower the buildup of kidney stones and support overall urinary health.

Precautions
Do not use if you have abdominal pain or diarrhea. Consult a healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking any medications. Discontinue use if diarrhea or loose stools occur. Do not exceed the recommended dose. Not intended for long-term use.
