Plant Profile
Clitoria ternatea, also called the Butterfly Pea, is a climbing vine with bright blue flowers that have a pale yellow or white center. It belongs to the Fabaceae family and has delicate compound leaves and thin, flat seed pods. The flowers contain natural pigments called anthocyanins, which are used as a food color that turns from blue to purple when mixed with acidic ingredients like lemon or lime. This plant is native to tropical Asia, especially the Indian subcontinent, and grows in many warm regions today.
Healthcare Perspective
In Ayurveda, Clitoria ternatea is called Aparajita (“the unconquered”) and is considered a herb that supports the brain. It is believed to improve memory, focus, and mental health. The plant also helps balance Vata and Pitta doshas. The roots are used for breathing problems like bronchitis and asthma. The flowers and leaves are used for skin care, eye health, and metabolism. In other Asian medicine, the plant is used as a diuretic and digestive aid. People often drink it as a tea to get its antioxidants, which help detox the body and reduce stress.
Phytochemical Composition
Clitoria ternatea has many active compounds in different parts of the plant. The flowers are high in ternatins, pigments that give the blue color and act as strong antioxidants. The leaves, roots, and seeds have flavonoids like kaempferol, quercetin, and myricetin. They also contain triterpenoids such as taraxerol, and plant sterols like beta-sitosterol. The plant has healthy fats (palmitic, stearic, and oleic acids), alkaloids, tannins, and cyclotides, which may help fight bacteria and insects. All these compounds together make the plant useful for brain health and reducing inflammation.
