Plant Profile
Chrysopogon zizanioides, commonly known as Vetiver, is a strong, perennial bunchgrass known for its unique fibrous root system. Unlike most grasses, its roots grow straight downward instead of spreading sideways. These roots can reach depths of 2 to 3 meters and form a dense underground layer. This structure makes the plant highly resistant to drought and very effective in preventing soil erosion. The roots are thick and spongy in texture. They are also highly aromatic and release a deep, earthy fragrance. This scent has been valued for centuries in perfumery and traditional medicine. Vetiver is native to tropical Asia and is believed to have originated in India. It naturally grows in wetlands and along riverbanks.
Healthcare Perspective
In Ayurveda, Chrysopogon zizanioides is known as Khus. It is classified as a cooling herb and is mainly used to balance the Pitta and Vata doshas. The aromatic roots are often made into pastes, decoctions, or infused waters. These preparations are used to manage excess body heat. Common uses include relief from burning sensations, fever, and dehydration. The essential oil of Vetiver is often called the “Oil of Tranquility.” It is widely used in aromatherapy to help calm the nervous system. It is believed to reduce stress, anxiety, and sleep problems. In addition, many tribal and folk medicine traditions in Asia and Africa use Vetiver root extracts on the skin. These are applied for their antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effects. They are used to support wound healing and soothe skin problems such as heat rashes and acne.
Phytochemical Composition
The chemical makeup of Chrysopogon zizanioides is complex and includes more than 150 identified compounds. The main active components are sesquiterpenes and their oxygenated forms. The essential oil profile is dominated by khusimol, alpha-vetivone, and beta-vetivone. These compounds make up a large part of the oil and give Vetiver its characteristic earthy scent. They also contribute to its ability to act as a fragrance fixative. Other important compounds include vetiverol, khusimone, and zizanoic acids. In addition to volatile oils, the roots contain several non-volatile compounds. These include flavonoids, phenols, and tannins, which add to the plant’s overall therapeutic value.
