The plant features leathery, obovate leaves with spiny margins. It also produces drooping clusters of bright yellow flowers that develop into ovoid berries. The berries are acidic, turning blue-black or deep purple upon ripening. Indigenous to the Himalayan range across India, Nepal, and Bhutan. The high-altitude species thrives in temperate and sub-tropical climates at elevations between 2,000 and 3,500 meters. It is often found on rocky slopes and at the edges of temperate forests.
