DESCRIPTION

Plant Profile
Berberis aristata is commonly known as Daruharidra or Indian Barberry. It is an erect, thorny, deciduous shrub of the Berberidaceae family. It typically reaches height of 2 to 3 meters. It is distinguished by its woody, yellowish-brown stem. The bark is deeply furrowed, which reveals a characteristic vibrant yellow wood when cut. The plant features leathery, obovate leaves with spiny margins. It also produces drooping clusters of bright yellow flowers that develop into ovoid berries. The berries are acidic, turning blue-black or deep purple upon ripening. Indigenous to the Himalayan range across India, Nepal, and Bhutan. The high-altitude species thrives in temperate and sub-tropical climates at elevations between 2,000 and 3,500 meters. It is often found on rocky slopes and at the edges of temperate forests.

Healthcare Perspective
In Ayurveda, Daruharidra is traditionally classified as a Vishaghna (botanical associated with addressing toxins) and Kandughna (botanical utilized in relation to skin irritation). It is valued for its Tikta (bitter) and Kashaya (astringent) tastes. It is primarily utilized in efforts to balance the Pitta and Kapha doshas. In traditional practices, a concentrated aqueous extract known as Rasaut (or Rasanjana) is prepared from the roots and lower stems. This preparation is historically incorporated into formulations. It is intended to support skin wellness, liver health (Yakrut-uttejaka), and eye care (Netra-roga).

Phytochemical Composition
The phytochemical profile of B. aristata is well-defined. It has a high concentration of isoquinoline alkaloids. These are primarily concentrated in the roots and stem bark. The most significant constituent is berberine. It is a yellow-colored alkaloid that serves as the primary chemical marker for the species. The matrix also includes other alkaloids such as palmatine, jatrorrhizine, columbamine, and berbamine. Besides these alkaloids, the plant contains tannins, resins, and phenolic compounds. These substance contribute to its complex bioactive profile. This profile is currently being evaluated in modern pharmacological research.

Precautions
