Plant Profile
Azadirachta indica is often reffered to as Neem. It is a fast-growing evergreen tree. It belongs to the Meliaceae family. The tree usually reaches a height of 15 to 20 meters. It is distinguished by a broad, spreading crown and deeply furrowed, grayish-brown bark. The leaves are pinnate in shape, featuring serrated leaflets tat remain green throughout the year. During spring, the tree produces small white flowers with fragrant clusters. They later develop into smooth, golden-yellow drupes. Neem is highly drought-tolerant and well-suited for arid climates with high temperatures. Neem is native to the Indian subcontinent—with significant populations in states like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. Today, it has naturalized in semi-arid regions globally.
Healthcare Perspective
In Ayurveda, Neem, is traditionally regarded as Sarva Roga Nivarin (the healer of all ailments) and is highly valued. It is known for its intensive cooling (Sheeta) and purifying (Rakta-shodhak) properties. It is primarily used with the intent to balance the Pitta and Kapha doshas. Different parts of the tree are used—including the leaves, bark, and seeds. They are used in traditional protocols for skin wellness, oral hygiene, and digestive support (Krimighna). It is recognized for its bitter (Tikta) and astringent (Kashaya). These tastes are linked to systemic detoxification and the management of "heat-related" imbalances.
Phytochemical Composition
The phytochemical profile of Azadirachta indica (Neem) is extraordinarily complex. It contains over 140 isolated compounds primarily. Most of these are classified as triterpenoids or limonoids. The most well-researched active ingredient is azadirachtin. It is a highly oxidized tetranortriterpenoid. It is recognized for its potent biological activity and its role as a primary marker for the plant's efficacy. Other significant limonoids, including nimbin, nimbidin, and nimbolide are also included. They are found in the leaves, bark, and seeds. The chemical matrix further includes flavonoids such as quercetin. Phytosterols like beta-sitosterol, and various polyphenols and tannins are also present. These compounds contribute to its overall antioxidant and pharmacological profile.
