Plant Profile
Arthrospira platensis, or Spirulina, is a tiny, multicellular cyanobacterium. It has unique spiral-shaped filaments called trichomes. This blue-green organism grows well in tropical and subtropical lakes. It thrives in alkaline waters with high pH levels and lots of carbonate and bicarbonate. It is a freshwater species, but it is very adaptable. You can find it in many places, like marshes, soil, seawater, and brackish water throughout Asia. In modern commercial production, it’s commonly grown in open-channel raceway ponds. These ponds thrive in warm temperatures and bright sunlight, especially in places like India.

Healthcare Perspective
In Ayurveda, Spirulina is a Rasayana. This means it’s a rejuvenating substance. It helps boost vitality, support longevity, and remove toxins from the body. It has a sweet Rasa (taste) and a cooling Virya (energy). This makes it good for balancing all three doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. It soothes heat-related imbalances and gives nourishment without being too heavy. Within various healthcare systems, Spirulina powderis used as a nutrient-rich "superfood." It helps boost immune function, improve muscle strength, and fight fatigue. It’s often included in wellness plans because it’s rich in iron. This helps keep hemoglobin levels healthy. It also serves as a natural protein source for vegetarian and vegan diets. In modern use, it's often given as a Churna (powder) mixed with honey or water. It can also be combined with herbs like Amalaki to boost its antioxidant and detoxifying effects.

Phytochemical Composition
Arthrospira platensis powder has a high concentration of phycocyanin. This blue pigment-protein complex is the main antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent. Also, this cyanobacterium offers a great source of high-quality protein. It has all essential amino acids. Plus, it contains a good amount of chlorophyll a and various carotenoids, like beta-carotene and zeaxanthin. It's one of the few plant-based sources high in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an important Omega-6 fatty acid. It also offers a rich mix of vitamins and minerals like B-complex vitamins, Vitamin K, and easily absorbed iron. Specialized sulfated polysaccharides, like calcium-spirulan, boost its biological activity. Also, essential minerals such as magnesium and potassium support overall metabolic functions.
