Plant Profile
Amomum subulatum, widely known as Large Cardamom or Badi Elaichi. It is a robust, perennial herbaceous plant. It belongs to the Zingiberaceae family. The plant grows in dense clumps. It has leafy shoots and long, lance-shaped, smooth green leaves. The species is most distinguished by its dull red, ovate-oblong capsules. They develop at the base of the stems. Inside the capsules are many small, dark brown seeds. The seeds are held in a mucilaginous pulp. This pulp emits a smoky and camphoraceous aroma. Primarily a Himalayan species. It is found in the high-altitude regions of South Asia. The plant thrives in cool, humid environments. It grows best under the shade of forest canopies near mountain streams. It is most extensively cultivated in the Eastern Himalayan region. Major growing areas include Sikkim, the Darjeeling district of West Bengal in India, as well as in Nepal and Bhutan.

Healthcare Perspective
In Ayurveda, Amomum subulatum, commonly referred to as Sthula Ela. It is traditionally valued for its Deepana (digestive stimulant) and Pachana (carminative) properties. It is used to balance the Kapha and Vata doshas. It is commonly included in traditional remedies. These remedies support respiratory health and gastrointestinal wellness. Its warming nature is used to support the clearance of excess mucus. It is also used to manage symptoms of digestive sluggishness.

Phytochemical Composition
The phytochemical profile of Amomum subulatum (Large Cardamom) is defined by its aromatic essential oil. It is primarily concentrated within the seeds. The dominant active ingredient is 1,8-cineole (also known as eucalyptol). This compound usually makes up 60% to 80% of the total oil content. It is responsible for the plant’s camphoraceous aroma. This is complemented by a variety of terpenoids. These include alpha-terpineol, limonene, terpinen-4-ol, and sabinene. Additionally, the seeds and the surrounding pericarp contain significant levels of compounds. These include phenolic and flavonoids. Most notably protocatechuic acid and quercetin. These compounds contribute to the plant's overall bioactive profile.
