More Information

Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis): The "Plant of Immortality". It belongs to the Asphodelaceae family. It is a succulent perennial plant. The plant is characterized by thick, fleshy and lance-shaped leaves. They grow in a dense rosette pattern. The leaves are grey-green in color. They often have serrated edges. Small white teeth line the margins. Inside the leaves is a clear, mucilaginous gel. This gel has made Aloe vera globally recognized. The plant is believed to have originated in the Arabian Peninsula. It is highly resilient and drought tolerant. These traits have allowed it to spread widely in subtropical and tropical regions. Today, it is found across the Indian Subcontinent. The plant thrives in well-drained sandy soils. It grows well in arid environments. It grows both in the wild and through extensive cultivation.

In Ayurveda, Aloe vera is referred to as Kumari (meaning "young girl"). The name itself reflects its historical reputation for supporting vitality and women's health. It is classified as having a Sheeta (cooling) potency. It also has a Madhura (sweet) post-digestive effect. These traditional qualitites makes it a primary choice for balancing Pitta (heat). They also help balance Vata doshas. In practice, the inner gel is commonly used to support digestive regularity and soothe the gastrointestinal lining. The cooling properties of it are frequently applied externally. It is used to manage skin irritations and maintain hydration. Beyond digestion and dermatological roles, Aloe vera also has traditional uses. It is integrated into formulations aimed at supporting healthy menstrual cycles and promoting metabolic clarity. This includes assisting the liver’s natural detoxification processes.

The phytochemical profile of Aloe vera is complex. It includes over 75 bioactive constituents. These are categorized primarily into polysaccharides, anthraquinones, and enzymes. The most important active marker within the inner leaf gel is acemannan. It is a long-chain polymannose. In contrast, the "latex" or sap found just beneath the leaf skin. The sap contains strong anthraquinones, most notably aloin (barbaloin) and emodin. In addition, Aloe vera also contains a several enzymes such as bradykinase. The gel is also rich in vitamins (A, C, E, and B12), minerals, and salicylic acid.

Do not use if you have abdominal pain or diarrhea. Consult a healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking any medications. Discontinue use if diarrhea or loose stools occur. Do not exceed the recommended dose. Not intended for long-term use.
