DESCRIPTION

Plant Profile
Siris is scientifically known as Albizia lebbeck. It is a majestic, spreading deciduous tree. It belongs to the Fabaceae family. The tree often reaches a height of 15 to 30 meters. It is easily identified by its greyish-brown, fissured bark and intricate bipinnate leaves. The tree is particularly famous for its fragrant, cream-colored "mimosa-like" flowers. It also produces distinctive straw-colored seed pods. These pods rattle in the wind. This characteristic gives the tree the nickname "Woman's Tongue" in some regions. Indigenous to the Indian Subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and Northern Australia. The tree is widely distributed across the tropical and subtropical regions of India, where it thrives in variety of soil types.

Healthcare Perspective
In Ayurveda, Siris (Albizia lebbeck) is well-known. It is recognized as a Vishaghna (anti-toxic) botanical. It is historically regarded as one of the premier herbs. It is used to manage "internal poisons" or environmental stressors. These factors may affect the body’s equilibrium. Traditional texts describes the use of Siris bark. It is utilized to support the body’s natural response to various skin sensitivities and respiratory irritations. It is classified as having a cooling effect on the blood. For this reason, it is commonly included in skin-clearing formulations. Also used to soothe the upper respiratory tract. In broader traditional practice, the bark is often prepared in specific forms. These include decoction or fine powders. These preparations help boost the body’s defenses against seasonal changes and external allergens.

Phytochemical Composition
The phytochemical profile of Siris (Albizia lebbeck) bark is well defined. It contains a high concentration of saponins and tannins. The bark is rich in macrocyclic spermine alkaloids known as budmunchiamines. These alkaloids are complemented by lebbekanin (a type of triterpenoid saponin). Beyond these primary markers, the bark contains various flavonoids. These include quercetin and kaempferol. Friedelin and various phenolic compounds are also present. Further, it enhances the bark's chemical stability.
