Tribulus terrestris is used in folk medicines as a tonic, aphrodisiac, palliative, astringent, stomachic, antihypertensive, diuretic, lithotriptic, and urinary disinfectant. Gokharu fruit is considered effective in most genitourinary tract disorders. Ayurveda has also mentioned the cardiotonic properties of T. terrestris.
Overview
Tribulus terrestris (family Zygophyllaceae) is commonly termed Gokharu or Gokshur has great significance in Indian and Chinese traditional medicine. The carpel fruits have stellate shape and a light-yellow color. The spiky fruit looks like the cloven hoof of a cow. It has diuretic, aphrodisiac, antiurolithic, immunomodulatory, antidiabetic, absorption enhancing, hypolipidemic, cardiotonic, central nervous system, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antispasmodic properties.
