DESCRIPTION

Plant Profile
Ziziphus spina-christi, known as Sidr, is a tough evergreen plant that grows as a tree or large shrub. It usually reaches a height of 5 to 10 meters. The branches are light brown and often grow in a crooked or zigzag pattern. Two thorns grow at each node. One thorn is straight, and the other curves like a hook. The leaves grow one by one along the stem. They are oval to slightly elongated and measure about 2–6 cm long. Each leaf has three strong veins that begin at the base. The surface is smooth and shiny green. Sidr originally comes from the Levant, Mesopotamia, and parts of East Africa. Over time, it spread to other regions because of its cultural and medicinal importance. It is now well established across the Indian Subcontinent and is cultivated in Rajasthan, India.

Healthcare Perspective
Sidr leaves have long been used in India for their cooling effect on the body. In the Middle East, they are respected as a sacred plant and are often used during rituals. The leaves are also known for their ability to reduce inflammation and control harmful microbes. Traditionally, dried Sidr leaves are crushed into a fine powder and used as a herbal shampoo. This helps clean the scalp, limit dandruff, and support healthy hair growth. When taken internally, the leaves are boiled in water to prepare a decoction. This drink is used to ease digestive discomfort, breathing problems such as asthma, and fever. For injuries, fresh leaf paste is applied directly to wounds to help prevent infection and support bone healing. Because Sidr leaves cool the body, they are commonly used to reduce excess heat and to relieve skin conditions like eczema and prickly heat.

Phytochemical Composition
The benefits of Ziziphus spina-christi leaves come from a wide range of natural plant chemicals called secondary metabolites. A major group among these is steroidal saponins. Christinin-A is the most important active compound in this group. The leaves also contain flavonoids, including quercetin, rutin, and spinosin. These compounds help protect cells and reduce inflammation. Other chemicals found in the leaves include cyclopeptide alkaloids such as ziziphine, along with tannins and triterpenoids like betulinic acid and ceanothic acid. In addition to these compounds, the leaves provide essential minerals such as calcium, iron, and magnesium. They also contain vitamins including B1, B12, and folic acid. The leaves are rich in mucilage and saponins, which allow them to form a gentle foam when mixed with water. This natural foaming action explains their traditional use as a plant-based cleanser.
