Plant Profile
Triphala consists of the dried fruits of three deciduous trees: Phyllanthus emblica (Amalaki), Terminalia bellirica (Bibhitaki), and Terminalia chebula (Haritaki). Amalaki is a medium tree. It has small, light green leaves and round, sour fruits. These fruits are fibrous. Amalaki grows in tropical and subtropical areas of India. Bibhitaki is a large, fast-growing tree. It can reach up to 50 meters tall. This tree has globular, velvety fruits. You can find it in the deciduous forests of India. Haritaki is a medium-sized tree. It has dark green, oval leaves and fruits that look like drupes with five ridges. You can find it widely in North India, from the Himalayas to West Bengal. These species do well in well-drained loamy soils and are integral to the ecology of the Indian subcontinent.
Healthcare Perspective
In traditional Ayurvedic medicine, Triphala is a Tridoshic Rasayana. This means it’s a rejuvenating tonic that helps balance the three vital energies or "doshas": Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. It has been utilized for over 2,000 years, with historical records appearing in ancient texts like the Sushruta Samhita. In many healthcare practices, it mainly helps with digestion and acts as a gentle natural laxative for colon cleansing. It’s not just good for gut health. It’s also used in mouth rinses for oral hygiene, supports eye health, and boosts skin vitality with its detox effects. Triphala is part of Siddha and Unani medicine. It acts as a health booster and helps the immune system.
Phytochemical Composition
Triphala has many polyphenols and hydrolyzable tannins. These compounds make up a large part of its chemical makeup.Gallic acid and ellagic acid are key antioxidants found in all three fruits. Chebulinic acid and chebulagic acid are special tannins mainly from Terminalia chebula. The formulation is very rich in ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), especially from Phyllanthus emblica. This ingredient stays stable during processing, thanks to protective tannins. The mixture includes various flavonoids like quercetin and luteolin. It also has saponins, phytosterols such as β-sitosterol, and small amounts of anthraquinones. These elements support its metabolic and digestive benefits.
