DESCRIPTION

Plant Profile
Terminalia arjuna, commonly called Arjuna, is a tall tree native to the Indian subcontinent. It usually grows to a height of about 20 to 25 meters. The trunk is strong and often wider near the base. The bark is smooth and peels off in thin, uneven layers. When it peels, the inner surface appears pinkish-gray to flesh colored. The branches hang slightly downward as the tree grows. The leaves grow almost opposite each other and are long and oval in shape. Small pale-yellow flowers appear in clusters near the tips of the branches. Arjuna commonly grows near rivers, streams, and dry riverbeds where moisture is available.

Healthcare Perspective
In Ayurveda, Terminalia arjuna is known for its use in heart care and is called a Hridaya herb. It has been used for this purpose for more than three thousand years. The bark has an astringent taste and a cooling effect on the body. These qualities help balance Pitta and Kapha doshas. Traditionally, the bark is prepared as a milk-based decoction known as Ksheerapaka. This preparation is used to support heart strength and healthy blood flow. Arjuna is also used to support healing of bones and tissues and is described as Sandhaniya. The bark is used as a blood purifier, especially in skin-related problems. Because of its binding nature, it is also used to help control diarrhea. Externally, bark preparations are applied to wounds and ulcers to support healing.

Phytochemical Composition
The health value of Terminalia arjuna comes mainly from compounds found in its bark. These include triterpenoids such as arjunic acid and arjunolic acid. Related compounds like arjunetin and arjunosides I to IV are also present. The bark contains tannins, usually around 12 to 15 percent. Important tannins include punicalagin and casuarinin. These compounds give the bark strong astringent and antioxidant effects. Arjuna bark also contains minerals. Calcium carbonate forms a large part of its water extract. Other minerals such as magnesium, zinc, and copper are present in smaller amounts. The bark also contains flavonoids like arjunolone and luteolin, along with plant sterols such as beta-sitosterol. Small amounts of coenzyme Q10 are also found and are linked to its traditional use in heart support.
