DESCRIPTION

Plant Profile
Spinacia oleracea, commonly known as Spinach, is an annual or biennial leafy plant from the Amaranthaceae family. It is known for its broad, soft leaves, which may be smooth or wrinkled in texture. In the early stage of growth, the leaves form a low cluster close to the ground. As the plant matures, it develops an upright flowering stem. The leaves are usually dark green and range from oval to triangular in shape. They are supported by thick, fleshy leaf stalks.
Spinach originated in central and Western Asia and later spread to many other regions. Today, it is grown worldwide as a major food crop in temperate climates. India is one of the leading producers of spinach. It is cultivated across several regions of the country.

Healthcare Perspective
In Ayurveda, Spinacia oleracea is known as Palakya or Palak. It is described as having a heavy and cooling nature. When prepared with the right spices, it is used to help balance Pitta and Vata doshas. Spinach is traditionally valued as a Raktavardhaka, meaning it supports healthy blood levels. Because of its high nutrient content, it is used to help manage fatigue and support overall strength.
In traditional healthcare systems, spinach leaves are also used as a mild laxative to support regular digestion. They are considered helpful for urinary health due to their gentle diuretic action. In folk practices, fresh spinach juice is sometimes applied externally as a cooling wash for skin irritation. Cooked spinach is valued for its Brimhana effect, meaning it helps nourish body tissues.

Phytochemical Composition
Spinacia oleracea leaves are rich in essential nutrients and plant compounds. They provide important minerals such as iron, calcium, and magnesium. The leaves are also high in vitamins, especially vitamin K1, vitamin A in the form of carotenoids, and folate (vitamin B9).
Spinach contains several antioxidants, including lutein, zeaxanthin, and quercetin. These compounds are commonly linked to eye health and protection of body cells. The leaves also contain natural nitrates, which support healthy blood flow. Other compounds include glycoglycerolipids, which are associated with anti-inflammatory effects. Spinach also contains oxalic acid, along with saponins and phenolic compounds. Together, these substances influence how spinach is used in traditional diets and health practices.
