DESCRIPTION
Plant Profile
Rosa damascena, commonly called the Damask Rose, is a deciduous shrub. It usually grows between 1 and 2.2 meters tall. The plant has long, arching stems that are covered with strong, curved thorns and stiff bristles. Its leaves are greyish-green and divided into smaller leaflets. Most leaves have five to seven oval leaflets with fine, toothed edges.
The flowers are the notable part of the plant. They grow in small clusters and are known for their strong, sweet fragrance. The blooms range in color from pale pink to deep rose. Many flowers have several layers of soft petals. In India, large-scale cultivation of Damask Rose is mainly found in the Kashmir Valley.
Healthcare Perspective
In Ayurveda, Rosa damascena is known as Shatapatri, which means “the flower with many petals.” It is valued for its cooling and sweet nature. These qualities help calm excess Pitta in the body. One of its best-known uses is in Gulkand. This is a traditional preparation made by slowly mixing rose petals with sugar under sunlight. Gulkand is used to reduce internal heat, ease digestion, and relieve mild constipation.
In many traditional health systems, rose water and rose oil are used for their calming effects. They are often included in remedies for stress, restlessness, and mental fatigue. Rose-based products are also used externally. Traditionally, they are applied to refresh tired eyes, cleanse the skin, and soothe mild irritation of sensitive areas.
Phytochemical Composition
The activity of Rosa damascena petals comes from a mix of aromatic and plant-based compounds. The essential oil contains fragrance compounds such as citronellol, geraniol, nerol, linalool, and phenylethyl alcohol. These compounds give the rose its scent and also help limit the growth of microbes. Phenylethyl alcohol is founded in rose water.
The petals also contain flavonoids such as quercetin, kaempferol, and rutin. Tannins and natural color compounds called anthocyanins are present as well. These include cyanidin-based pigments. In addition, the petals provide vitamin C and organic acids like gallic acid and ellagic acid. Another important compound, corilagin, is also found. Together, these substances explain the rose’s long use in skin care, cooling remedies, and general wellness preparations.
