DESCRIPTION

Plant Profile
Pueraria tuberosa, commonly known as Vidari Kanda or Indian Kudzu, is a large perennial climber. It has a woody stem that can grow to considerable lengths as it spreads over nearby support. The most notable part of the plant is its thick, rounded tuberous root. These tubers can grow up to about 60 cm long and are white and fleshy inside. They have a mildly sweet taste, often compared to licorice. The plant has large leaves made up of three leaflets. Its flowers are eye-catching and grow in long hanging clusters. They are usually bluish-purple to lilac in color and often appear when the plant has shed its leaves. Pueraria tuberosa is widely found across the Indian subcontinent. It grows well in tropical and subtropical climates, up to elevations of about 1,200 meters. In India, it is commonly seen in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, and across the Western Ghats.

Healthcare Perspective
In Ayurveda, Pueraria tuberosa is known as Vidari Kanda and is regarded as an important Rasayana, or rejuvenating herb. It is especially valued for its Balya action, meaning it supports strength, and Brimhana action, meaning it nourishes body tissues. The herb is mainly used to balance Vata and Pitta doshas. It is also a key ingredient in well-known classical preparations such as Chyawanprash and Saraswatarishta. Traditionally, the tuber is used as a Vajikarana herb, meaning it supports vitality and reproductive health. It is also used as a galactagogue to support healthy milk production in nursing mothers. Beyond this, Vidari Kanda is used in different traditional systems to support breathing comfort, calm the digestive system, and promote healthy aging. Its cooling nature makes it useful for managing internal heat, supporting heart health, and aiding recovery after illness or physical fatigue.

Phytochemical Composition
The activity of Pueraria tuberosa comes largely from a group of compounds known as isoflavonoids. These compounds are linked to its antioxidant and adaptogenic effects. The most important of these is puerarin, an isoflavone glycoside that has been widely studied for its role in supporting heart and nerve health. Other important compounds include daidzein and genistein, along with a unique compound called tuberosin. The roots also contain pterocarpans such as puerarinone, as well as plant sterols like beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol. In addition to these bioactive compounds, the tubers are rich in starch, proteins, and amino acids. This nutritional content explains the plant’s long-standing use as an energizing and nourishing botanical.
