DESCRIPTION

Plant Profile
Plumbago zeylanica, commonly called Chitrak, is a tough evergreen plant that spreads along the ground. It usually grows between 1 and 2 meters tall. The stems are woody and slightly rough, with visible lines on the surface. The leaves grow one at a time along the stem. They are oval, smooth, and lightly glossy. The root is the part most often used. It is thick, firm, and turns reddish-brown once dried. Chitrak produces small white flowers at the tips of its branches. These flowers have a sticky outer surface due to fine glandular hairs. The plant grows naturally in warm regions and is commonly seen across open plains in India. Also found in other tropical and subtropical areas.

Healthcare Perspective
In Ayurveda, Chitrak is mainly known for its strong effect on digestion. It helps improve appetite and supports digestive fire (Agni). The root is an important ingredient in traditional remedies such as Chitrakadi Vati. These are used for indigestion, gas, piles, and weak digestion. Chitrak is also used in traditional practices for joint comfort, breathing support, and certain skin concerns. The herb generates strong internal heat, so it is never used in large amounts. Ayurvedic practice recommends purifying the root (Shodhana) before use to make it milder and safer.

Phytochemical Composition
The key active substance in Chitrak is plumbagin. This compound is responsible for the root’s sharp taste and heating action. Other related compounds, such as chitranone and zeylanone, are present in smaller quantities. The plant also contains flavonoids, alkaloids, and natural plant sterols like beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol. Tannins and phenolic compounds are also found. Together, these components explain the long-standing use of Chitrak in digestion-focused herbal traditions.
