DESCRIPTION

Plant Profile
Plantago ovata, commonly known as syllium or Isabgol, is a soft annual herb that grows about 10 to 45 cm tall. The plant has narrow, pointed leaves that form a low rosette near the ground. It produces small white flowers arranged on compact, cylindrical spikes. The seeds develop inside these spikes. They are small, oval, and slightly curved, measuring about 2–3 mm in length. Their color ranges from pinkish-grey to brown. Psyllium is native to the Mediterranean region and dry parts of West Asia. Today, India is the world’s largest producer, with major cultivation in the dry, sandy soils of Gujarat and Rajasthan.

Healthcare Perspective
In traditional healthcare, Psyllium seeds are valued for their cooling and soothing nature. In Ayurveda, the herb is known as Ishadgola and is described as sweet in taste, cooling in effect, and heavy and oily in quality. It is mainly used to balance Pitta and Vata doshas. The seeds are traditionally taken as a gentle fiber that helps regulate bowel movement. They can support both constipation and loose stools by absorbing water and adjusting moisture levels in the intestines. In Siddha medicine, soaked Psyllium seeds are used as a thick drink to calm irritation in the digestive and urinary systems. In modern healthcare, Psyllium is widely used as a natural fiber to support digestion, help maintain healthy cholesterol levels, and assist in stable blood sugar control.

Phytochemical Composition
The main active component of Psyllium seeds is mucilage, a form of soluble fiber found in the outer seed coat. This mucilage is made of complex plant sugars that can absorb large amounts of water and form a gel-like mass. In addition to fiber, the seeds contain fatty acids such as linoleic, oleic, and palmitic acids. They also provide plant sterols like sitosterol, along with small amounts of iridoid glycosides such as aucubin, which is linked to mild anti-inflammatory effects. Psyllium seeds also supply plant-based protein and minerals, including potassium, magnesium, and iron. Together, these components explain the plant’s long-standing use as a digestive regulator and prebiotic fiber source.

Precautions
Do not use if you have abdominal pain or diarrhea. Consult a healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking any medications. Discontinue use if diarrhea or loose stools occur. Do not exceed the recommended dose. Not intended for long-term use.
