DESCRIPTION

Plant Profile
Phyllanthus amarus, commonly known as Bhumi Amla or Stonebreaker, is a small annual herb that usually grows 30–60 cm tall. It has thin, spreading branches with two neat rows of small, oval leaves. This leaf pattern gives the plant a feather-like look. A unique feature of this plant is how its tiny pale green flowers and round seed capsules grow in a single line along the underside of the branches. This has led to the common description “seed under leaf.” Phyllanthus amarus grows in warm climates across the world. Although it may have originated in parts of South America, it is now widely found across India. In India, it commonly grows as a weed in fields and open land.

Healthcare Perspective
Phyllanthus amarus has been used in traditional healthcare for more than 2,000 years, especially for liver and kidney support. In Ayurveda, it is known as Bhumyamalaki. It is described as bitter and astringent in taste, with a cooling effect on the body. It is mainly used to balance Pitta and Kapha doshas. The whole plant is traditionally used to support liver function and is often included in remedies for jaundice, skin issues, and excess body heat. In Siddha medicine, it is used as a mild diuretic and digestive aid for urinary and stomach concerns. In South American folk medicine, the plant is known as Chanca Piedra and is commonly prepared as a tea to support the natural movement of kidney and gallbladder stones. It is also used in African traditional medicine to support metabolic balance and overall resilience.

Phytochemical Composition
Phyllanthus amarus contains several natural compounds that explain its long-standing use. The most important are lignans, especially phyllanthin and hypophyllanthin. These compounds are well studied for their antioxidant and liver-supporting activity. The plant also contains tannins and polyphenols such as geraniin, corilagin, and gallic acid. Flavonoids like quercetin and rutin add to its anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, it provides small amounts of alkaloids, triterpenoids, and plant sterols. Together, these compounds support cellular protection and the body’s natural detoxification processes.

Precautions
Do not use if you have abdominal pain or diarrhea. Consult a healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking any medications. Discontinue use if diarrhea or loose stools occur. Do not exceed the recommended dose. Not intended for long-term use.
