DESCRIPTION

Plant Profile
The Nagkesar flower comes from the evergreen tree Mesua ferrea. It is a striking, fragrant bloom with four large, snowy-white petals. These petals overlap and surround a dense center of bright golden-yellow stamens. The flowers are usually 4 to 10 centimeters wide. Nagkesar blooms in the dry season, most often from March to July. The flowers open early in the morning and last for only one day. Mesua ferrea grows naturally in the wet tropical regions of South and Southeast Asia, from the Eastern Himalayas through the Western Ghats. The tree is the national tree of Sri Lanka and the state flower of Tripura, India.

Healthcare Perspective
In Ayurveda and other traditional systems, such as Siddha, Mesua ferrea, known as Nagkesar, is valued for its cooling and astringent effects. It is also known for its ability to stop bleeding. In Ayurveda, it is classified as a Pitta-Kapha hara herb, meaning it helps reduce excess heat and mucus in the body. The dried stamens or flower buds are commonly used to treat bleeding piles. Heavy menstrual flow and digestive problems like gastritis and dysentery. For external use, the seed oil is applied to calm inflamed skin conditions like eczema and scabies. It is also massaged into joints to ease rheumatic pain. In Siddha medicine, Nagkesar is included in remedies for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory action. especially for respiratory congestion and wound healing.

Phytochemical Composition
The chemical makeup of Mesua ferrea includes many active compounds, especially coumarins and xanthones. The seeds are rich in 4-phenylcoumarins such as mesuol, mesuagin, mesuone, and mammeisin. These compounds give the plant its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. The stamens, most often used in Nagkesar remedies, contain biflavonoids such as mesuaferrone A and mesuaferrone B. Also include mesuanic acid, gallic acid, and the triterpenoids alpha-amyrin and beta-amyrin. The plant also provides beta-sitosterol, a compound known to support immune function. The flower’s scent comes from a volatile oil made up of terpenes such as trans-caryophyllene and alpha-humulene. The seed oil contains fatty acids, including oleic, linoleic, and palmitic acids. These oils help explain its traditional use in treating skin problems and joint pain."
