DESCRIPTION

Plant Profile
Mentha piperita, or Peppermint, is a perennial herb. It has square, reddish-purple stems and dark green, oval leaves. The leaves have serrated edges and clear veins. Watermint (Mentha aquatica) and spearmint (Mentha spicata) naturally hybridize. This plant usually grows 30–90 cm tall. You can easily spot it by its strong, cooling scent from high menthol levels. Geographically, it has become naturalized globally due to its hardy nature. It thrives in moist, shaded environments and is now widely cultivated in temperate regions across Asia with the United States and India being among the world's leading producers majorly

Healthcare Perspective
In many healthcare systems, Mentha piperita is used for its many benefits. It is known for its cooling, carminative, and antispasmodic effects. In Ayurveda, it's known as Pudina. It has a Katu (pungent) taste and can be Ushna (hot) or Sheeta (cooling) based on how it's prepared. Pudina helps balance the Kapha and Vata doshas and soothes Pitta-related heat. It has been part of traditional medicine in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. People use it to help with stomach issues like indigestion, bloating, and colicky pain. Other traditional systems and modern herbal practices use the plant’s essential oil and leaf extracts. They apply these in aromatherapy and on the skin. This helps with tension headaches, muscle aches, and respiratory congestion. Its role in these systems is backed by secondary metabolites like menthol and rosmarinic acid. These compounds build its reputation as a versatile plant. They are noted in both historical pharmacopeias and contemporary complementary medicine.

Phytochemical Composition
Mentha piperita has a unique chemical profile. This is mainly due to various secondary metabolites found in its leaf essential oil. The key active ingredient is menthol, usually found at 30–55%. This monoterpene alcohol responsible for the plant's signature cooling sensation and analgesic properties. This is accompanied by menthone (14–32%), which contributes to its characteristic aroma and carminative effects. Other notable volatile compounds include menthyl acetate, 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol), limonene, and menthofuran. The leaves also contain important phenolic compounds and flavonoids. These include rosmarinic acid, eriocitrin, and luteolin-7-O-rutinoside. They offer strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. The exact concentration of these ingredients can change. It depends on the plant's age, where it’s grown, and how it’s cultivated."
