DESCRIPTION

Plant Profile
Maranta arundinacea, known as Arrowroot, is a perennial herb. It has large, oval leaves. The main part of the plant is its underground rhizomes. These are fleshy, cylindrical stems with thin, brownish scales. These rhizomes store starch, which is easily digestible and highly nutritious. Arrowroot originally comes from the moist tropical regions of Central and South America and the Caribbean. Today, it is widely grown because of its economic and dietary value. In India, it is mainly cultivated in the northeastern states. Arrowroot starch comes from rhizomes. It serves as a thickening agent in cooking and as a nutritional supplement.

Healthcare Perspective
Arrowroot has been valued in traditional medicine for a long time. In Ayurveda, it is called Tugaksheeri and is considered gentle and nourishing. It soothes the digestive and urinary systems. It helps relieve burning sensations, calms coughs, and strengthens the body during illness. Arrowroot starch is commonly used to make a light, easy-to-digest gruel. It’s great for infants, the elderly, and people recovering from illness. In the past, people in the Caribbean and South America used mashed rhizomes for skin problems, insect bites, and wounds. This is how the plant got its English name. Today, Arrowroot is still recommended as a “bland diet” food that helps with digestive issues like diarrhea and acidity.

Phytochemical Composition
Arrowroot rhizomes are packed with bioactive compounds. These compounds are excellent for health and nutrition. They mainly consist of high-quality starch. This starch has 20–30% amylose and 70–80% amylopectin. It can also act as a prebiotic in the gut. They also have phenols and flavonoids, such as rutin, quercetin, and kaempferol. Additionally, they include alkaloids, saponins, glycosides, tannins, and terpenoids. These compounds give Arrowroot antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. The rhizomes are also a good source of essential minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and iron, as well as folate (Vitamin B9). All of these make Arrowroot a valuable functional food and traditional medicine.
