DESCRIPTION

Plant Profile
Kalmegh, also called Andrographis paniculata, is a small seasonal herb. It grows upright and usually reaches about 30 to 100 cm in height. The stem is thin and green and feels slightly angular when touched. Leaves grow opposite each other. They are narrow, smooth, and deep green in color. The plant bears tiny white flowers with faint purple marks. After flowering, slim seed pods form. These pods hold many small brown seeds. Kalmegh grows easily in warm regions. In India and Sri Lanka, it is commonly seen near farms, forest edges, and damp, shaded land.

Healthcare Perspective
Kalmegh is known in Ayurveda mainly for its strong bitterness. Because of this nature, it is traditionally used to support digestion and liver function. It is commonly taken when the body feels heavy, sluggish, or overheated. Ayurvedic practitioners use it mainly to calm Pitta and Kapha. Kalmegh is included in many traditional herbal preparations, especially those used during fever or seasonal imbalance. Even today, it is widely used in herbal products meant for cleansing and general wellness.

Phytochemical Composition
Kalmegh contains natural bitter compounds that give it its character. The most important one is andrographolide, found mostly in the leaves. Along with this, the plant has other related natural compounds in small amounts. These do not act alone but work together.
The herb also contains flavonoids, plant sugars, and minerals in trace levels. This natural mix explains why Kalmegh has remained in use for a long time.

Precautions
Do not use if you have abdominal pain or diarrhea. Consult a healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking any medications. Discontinue use if diarrhea or loose stools occur. Do not exceed the recommended dose. Not intended for long-term use.
