Inula racemosa is commonly known as Pushkarmool. It is a robust perennial herb. It belongs to the Asteraceae family. It has large, leathery and elliptical leaves. The plant produces bright yellow flower heads. The flowers can frow up to 5 cm in diameter. The plant typically grows to height of 0.5 to 1.5 meters. Its roots are thick, aromatic, and highly camphor-scented. The roots are the most valued part of plant. They are widely used in traditional medicine for respiratory and cardiovascular health. Geographically, Inula racemosa is native to the temperate and alpine regions of the Western Himalayas. It is mainly found at altitudes between 1,500 and 4,200 meters. It is naturally distributed across Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand in India.

Healthcare Perspective
In Ayurveda, Inula racemosa is referred to as Pushkarmool. It is historically classified as a premier herb for balancing of the Vata and Kapha doshas. The plant is known for its ""Ushna Virya"" (hot potency). It shows a strong affinity for the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Traditional texts, such as the Charaka Samhita, highlight its traditional uses. It is mentioned for managing Hikka (hiccups), Kasa (cough), and Shwasa (breathlessness). The herb is valued as a potent ""Hrdya"" (cardiotonic) for chest discomfort. Beyond Ayurveda, the plant is integrated into other traditional systems. In Tibetan medicine, it is used for contagious fevers and upper body pain. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is used for digestive issues including abdominal pain and lyndentery. In modern herbalism, the root is viewed as an expectorant and tonic. Native American traditions have historically used similar species for respiratory support. Across systems, the herb is known for its aromatic, bitter, and warming qualities. These properties are believed to help clear congestion and support vital organ function.

Phytochemical Composition
The therapeutic activity of Inula racemosa is mainly linked to its high concentration of sesquiterpene lactones. These compounds constitute the bulk of its essential oil. The most significant of these are alantolactone and isoalantolactone. Together, these two compounds are often referred to as helenin. They serve as the plant's primary bioactive markers. The roots also contain other related lactones such as dihydroalantolactone, dihydroisoalantolactone, and inunolide. which contribute to its characteristic camphor-like aroma and pharmacological profile. In addition to these terpenes, the plant is a rich source of inulin. Inulin is a polysaccharide that can make up to 10% of the root's dry weight. Other identified constituents include phytosterols like beta-sitosterol and daucosterol. The plant also contains flavonoids (such as quercetin and apigenin). Phenolic acids, and essential oil components like camphor and borneol. These diverse compounds work synergistically. They contribute to the herb's observed anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and cardioprotective qualities."
