DESCRIPTION
Plant Profile
Centella asiatica, commonly known as Gotu Kola is a slender, perennial creeping herb belonging to the Apiaceae family. It is characterized by its long, reddish-green stolons (runners) that root at the nodes to form dense, carpet-like mats. Its most distinctive feature is its leaves, which are bright green, fleshy, and shaped like a fan or a kidney (reniform), often with scalloped or crenate margins. These leaves are held aloft by long, smooth petioles that can reach up to 20 cm in length. While the plant is famous for its foliage, it also produces inconspicuous, small white or light-purple flowers that bloom in rounded clusters called umbels near the soil surface. Geographically, Centella asiatica is found throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. It is indigenous to Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and parts of Africa. The plant thrives in high-moisture environments, typically flourishing in marshy areas, wetlands, riverbanks, and damp grasslands from sea level up to altitudes of 1,800 meters. Cultivated in Uttar Pradesh & Madhya Pradesh, India
Healthcare Perspective
Centella asiatica is a cornerstone of Ayurveda, where it is traditionally referred to as Mandukaparni. Within this system, it is categorized as a Medhya Rasayana, a class of rejuvenating herbs believed to promote mental clarity, memory, and cognitive longevity. Ayurvedic practitioners traditionally use it to balance the Pitta dosha and support the nervous system, often prescribing it for conditions related to mental fatigue and skin health. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), known as Ji Xue Cao, the herb is valued for its "clearing heat" and "detoxifying" properties. Many cultures also incorporate it into their diets as a "longevity herb" to support vascular health and improve blood circulation, particularly in the lower limbs. The herb remains one of the most widely recognized botanical ingredients in global traditional medicine.
Phytochemical Composition
The primary pharmacological activity of Centella asiatica is attributed to its rich concentration of pentacyclic triterpenoids, often collectively referred to as centellosides. The most significant active ingredients include the saponins asiaticoside and madecassoside, along with their corresponding aglycones (the active acid forms), asiatic acid and madecassic acid. Beyond these primary triterpenes, the leaves contain other bioactive constituents such as caffeoylquinic acids, flavonoids (like quercetin and kaempferol), and phytosterols, which contribute to the plant's overall therapeutic profile.
