Plant Profile
Curcuma longa, known as turmeric, is a perennial herb from the ginger family, Zingiberaceae. It has large, oblong leaves and dull yellow flowers. The plant is mainly valued for its thick, fleshy rhizomes. These underground stems have a rough, brown outer layer and a bright, deep orange interior. When sliced, the cross-sections show a dense, waxy texture and concentric rings. These rings contain the bioactive compound curcumin. Curcuma longa is native to tropical South Asia, and India is the largest producer and exporter of turmeric. In India, it is cultivated in Andhra Pradesh and the northeastern regions.

Healthcare Perspective
Curcuma longa is important in traditional healthcare, especially in Ayurveda, where it is called Haridra. It is described as a cleanser of the body and is used to balance all three doshas. It supports the respiratory, digestive, and circulatory systems. Turmeric is also used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, where it is called Jiang Huang. The rhizome can be prepared in many ways. It is applied as a paste to wounds or sprains. It is also taken as a powder or juice to support digestion. These practices show the herb’s versatility. Turmeric is used both as a daily health tonic and as a remedy for inflammation and metabolic issues.

Phytochemical Composition
Curcuma longa contains more than 230 known compounds. These are divided into non-volatile curcuminoids and volatile essential oils. The curcuminoids are fat-soluble polyphenols. They give turmeric its yellow-orange color. The main compounds are curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin. Volatile oils make up 3% to 7% of the rhizome. These oils are mostly sesquiterpenes. Key compounds include ar-turmerone, alpha-turmerone, beta-turmerone (curlone), zingiberene, and ar-curcumene. The rhizome also contains polysaccharides, proteins, and resins. Together, these compounds support the plant’s chemical balance and biological activity.
