Plant Profile
Coleus forskohlii, commonly known as Indian Coleus, is a perennial aromatic herb from the Lamiaceae family. It is best known for its tuberous root system. The roots grow in clusters and are golden brown, thick, and fibrous. They can reach up to 20 cm in length and have a strong aromatic scent. This scent is different from that of the leaves. The plant is native to the subtropical Himalayan regions of the Indian subcontinent. It grows naturally at elevations between 600 and 2,300 meters. Its native range includes India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.
Healthcare Perspective
In Ayurveda, Coleus forskohlii is known as Makandi or Gandira. It is valued for its role in balancing the Kapha and Vata doshas. The herb is described as having a heating nature, called Ushna Virya. It also has a pungent and bitter taste. Because of these traits, it is often used for conditions linked to internal stagnation and breathing congestion. Traditional practitioners use the tuberous roots as a cardiotonic to support heart health. The roots are also used as a digestive stimulant, known as Deepana. This helps manage abdominal colic and slow metabolism. Outside Ayurveda, the plant has a long history of use in other systems. In Egyptian and African folk medicine, it is used as a natural diuretic and emmenagogue. These uses support urinary and reproductive health. Across South Asia, the plant is used in folk remedies for skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. It is also used for long-term breathing problems like asthma and bronchitis. This is due to its believed ability to relax smooth muscles and clear the airways.
Phytochemical Composition
The roots of Coleus forskohlii are best known for their high content of forskolin, also called coleonol. Forskolin is a labdane diterpene and is the plant’s main active compound. It is found mainly in the cork and tuberous parts of the root. Forskolin works by activating the enzyme adenylate cyclase. This action raises levels of cyclic AMP, or cAMP, inside cells. In addition to forskolin, the roots contain several related diterpenoids. These include deacetylforskolin, 9-deoxyforskolin, and 1,9-dideoxyforskolin. These compounds are thought to support the activity of forskolin. The roots also contain other helpful compounds. These include polyphenols such as rosmarinic acid, chlorogenic acid, and caffeic acid. Other components include flavonoids, tannins, and essential oils. These oils are rich in sesquiterpenes like beta-caryophyllene and alpha-cedrol. Together, these compounds support the plant’s antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and blood vessel–relaxing effects.
