Plant Profile
Cinnamomum tamala, also called Indian Bay Leaf, is a medium-sized evergreen tree from the Lauraceae family. It usually grows 10 to 20 meters tall. Its leaves are aromatic, leathery, and lance-shaped, with three main veins running from base to tip. This makes them different from Mediterranean bay leaves, which have only one vein. The tree is native to the Himalayas in India and grows well in wet tropical and subtropical areas at heights between 500 and 2,400 meters.

Healthcare Perspective
In Ayurveda, Cinnamomum tamala helps balance Vata and Kapha doshas and increase Pitta. It is considered hot and helps improve digestion, which can reduce bloating, indigestion, and poor appetite. It is also used for respiratory problems, like clearing mucus and easing coughs. In Siddha medicine, the leaves and bark are used to relieve gas and have astringent properties. They are often given to support the liver, improve heart health, and reduce inflammation.

Phytochemical Composition
The leaves contain many active compounds, mostly in their essential oil. The exact mix can change depending on the region. Many leaves have eugenol, which gives a clove-like smell. Some have cinnamaldehyde (like cinnamon) or linalool. The oil also contains monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, including beta-caryophyllene, sabinene, limonene, and alpha-pinene. The leaves also contain flavonoids like quercetin and kaempferol, along with polyphenols, tannins, and glycosides, which contribute to their antioxidant and antimicrobial effects.

Precautions
Do not use if you have abdominal pain or diarrhea. Consult a healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking any medications. Discontinue use if diarrhea or loose stools occur. Do not exceed the recommended dose. Not intended for long-term use.
