DESCRIPTION

Plant Profile
Matricaria chamomilla, commonly known as German Chamomile, is a fragrant annual herb from the Asteraceae family. It has thin, spindle-shaped roots and an upright, smooth stem that branches freely. The plant usually grows between 15 and 60 cm tall. Its leaves are light green and finely divided into narrow, feathery segments, giving the plant a soft and airy appearance. The most recognizable feature is its single flower head. Each flower has a hollow, cone-shaped center, which is an important identifying trait. Around this center are 10–25 white ray flowers, surrounding a bright golden-yellow cluster of small tubular flowers. When crushed, both the flowers and leaves release a gentle, apple-like scent. German chamomile is native to Southern and Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean region, and Western Asia. Because it adapts easily to different climates, it is now grown in many parts of the world. In India, it is cultivated mainly in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Healthcare Perspective
In Ayurveda, Matricaria chamomilla is known as Babuna and is traditionally used to balance the Pitta and Kapha doshas. It is described as having a bitter and pungent taste with a cooling effect. Because of this, it has long been used to reduce digestive heat and calm the nervous system. Ayurvedic experts often suggest using the dried flowers to help the mind stay clear and focused. These flowers are also a gentle way to relieve gas and soothe stomach pain. The plant is also used to reduce swelling in specific parts of the body. It acts as a natural pain reliever for people dealing with nerve pain and rheumatic discomfort. Chamomile is used to help keep the bladder and kidneys healthy. It is also a popular natural remedy for helping women balance their monthly periods. In Western medicine, chamomile has a long history of being used as a natural way to calm the body. It acts as a gentle sleep aid to help people relax. It is also used to reduce swelling and redness. Homeopathic remedies are often recommended for people who get angry easily or are very sensitive to pain. They are especially helpful for children who feel overwhelmed by physical discomfort. In many cultures, chamomile is well-known for soothing an upset stomach. It is also used as a natural skin treatment.

Phytochemical Composition
The therapeutic effects of Matricaria chamomilla come from a rich mix of more than 120 active plant compounds. These are mainly divided into volatile essential oils and water-soluble phenolic compounds. Chamomile oil is famous for its bright, deep blue color. This blue color comes from a special substance called chamazulene. It isn't in the plant at first; instead, it is created when the plant is heated with steam to make the oil. The oil also contains alpha-bisabolol, a natural part of the plant that helps soothe the body. These oil-based compounds are widely known for their anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic actions. Alongside the essential oils, chamomile contains important polyphenols, especially flavonoids. Apigenin is one of the most notable and is known for its calming effect due to its ability to interact with GABA receptors in the brain. Other key flavonoids include luteolin, quercetin, and patuletin. The plant also contains coumarins such as herniarin and umbelliferone, as well as phenolic acids like caffeic and chlorogenic acids. Together, these compounds give chamomile its strong antioxidant, soothing, and therapeutic properties.
