DESCRIPTION

Plant Profile
Cassia angustifolia also known as Senna alexandrina, and commonly known as Indian Senna. It is a small, perennial shrub characterized by its upright stems and pinnate leaves. Each leaf comprises four to eight pairs of lanceolate, grayish-green leaflets. It belongs to the Fabaceae (Leguminosae) family. It produces bright yellow flowers and flat, oblong pods. The plant is highly valued for its sennosides. These are hydroxyanthracene glycosides traditionally used as natural laxatives. C. angustifolia thrives in hot, arid climates. It is indigenous to the Arabian Peninsula and Somalia. However, it has been extensively naturalized and cultivated in the Indian subcontinent. Particularly in the well-drained, sandy soils of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu.

Healthcare Perspective
In traditional and modern healthcare systems, Cassia angustifolia (widely known as Senna or Swarnapatri) is primarily utilized for its stimulant laxative properties. In Ayurveda, it is classified as a Virechana (purgative) herb. It is used to balance Pitta and Vata doshas. Historically, it is included in formulations with the aim of addressing chronic constipation. It is also used for abdominal distention, and the clearance of ama (metabolic toxins). In modern regulatory frameworks, Senna is categorized as a non-prescription drug. It is used for the short-term relief of occasional constipation. It is also standardly utilized in clinical settings for bowel preparation prior to diagnostic procedures. Common examples include colonoscopies, to ensure adequate evacuation.

Phytochemical Composition
The chemical profile of Cassia angustifolia is primarily defined by a group of anthraquinone glycosides known as sennosides A and B. They are found as the dominant active constituents found in both the leaves and pods. These compounds function as prodrugs. They become active in the large intestine. They are hydrolyzed and reduced by gut microbiota into active rhein-anthrones. These active forms stimulate colonic motility. The plant also contains minor glycosides such as sennosides C and D. Free anthraquinones are also present including rhein, aloe-emodin, and chrysophanol. The phytochemical matrix is further enriched by flavonoids, such as kaempferol and isorhamnetin. Other supporting constituents include mucilage. It provides a soothing effect on the digestive mucosa. Small amounts of volatile oils containing terpenes and aldehydes.

Precautions
Do not use if you have abdominal pain or diarrhea. Consult a healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking any medications. Discontinue use if diarrhea or loose stools occur. Do not exceed the recommended dose. Not intended for long-term use.
