DESCRIPTION

Plant Profile
Capsicum annuum, specifically the Bird’s Eye chili variety, is a compact, perennial sub-shrub. It usually grows to a height of 0.3 to 0.5 meters. The plant is characterized by its prolific branching. It has small, lanceolate green leaves. These leaves form a thick canopy for its fruit. The plant produces small, solitary white or greenish-white flowers. They later develop into slender, tapering fruits. The fruits are about 2 to 4 cm in length. The chillies are notable for their erect growth habit. They point upward toward the sky rather than hanging a pendant. Their transition from a bright green to a vivid, glossy red upon maturity. Renowned for their intense pungency. They typically register between 50,000 and 100,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU). They deliver a sharp and clean heat. They also have a slightly fruity undertone that is fundamental to many global cuisines. While the Capsicum genus originated in the Americas. Specifically, Mexico and Central America. Bird’s Eye chili has become one of the most widely naturalized varieties globally. In India, it is extensively cultivated. Major growing regions include the Northeastern states. Such as Mizoram, and southern regions like Kerala.

Healthcare Perspective
In Ayurveda, Capsicum annuum is also known as Raktamaricha or Katuvira. It is categorized as having a pungent taste (Katu rasa) and a heating potency (Ushna virya). Traditionally, it is utilized with the intent to balance Kapha and Vata doshas. It works by stimulating the digestive fire (Agni). Practitioners associate this with the management of sluggish digestion, flatulence, and reduced appetite. In Ayurveda, such as Siddha and Unani, the fruit is valued as a stimulant and rubefacient. Historically, it has been prepared as a topical paste or infused oil. These preparations are used to increase local blood circulation and provide a warming sensation. Particularly in the context of musculoskeletal discomforts like joint stiffness. Furthermore, folk medicine across South and Southeast Asia often incorporates the Bird's Eye chili for respiratory support. Its sharp heat is thought to act as a deodorant to assist in clearing nasal and bronchial congestion. The plant's high concentration of capsaicin serves as the primary driver for these traditional applications. It also laid the foundation for modern topical formulations.

Phytochemical Composition
The chemical complexity of Capsicum annuum (Bird’s Eye chili) is dominated by capsaicinoids. These are a group of alkaloid compounds responsible for its signature heat. The most prevalent of these is capsaicin. It accounts for approximately 70% of the total capsaicinoid content. Dihydrocapsaicin, nordihydrocapsaicin, and homocapsaicin are also present. Beyond these "pungent principles," the fruit is a prolific source of antioxidant pigments known as carotenoids. Capsanthin is the primary red pigment. Lutein, zeaxanthin, and beta-carotene (provitamin A) are also present. The plant also contains a diverse array of phenolic compounds and flavonoids. Including quercetin, luteolin, and sinapic acid, which contribute to its overall bioactive profile. Nutritionally, the Bird's Eye variety is exceptionally high in vitamin C (ascorbic acid). Its vitamin C levels often exceed the concentration found in citrus fruits. It also provides significant amounts of vitamin B6, vitamin K1, and essential minerals like potassium and copper.
