DESCRIPTION

Plant Profile
Black mustard, botanically called Brassica nigra, is a tall annual plant that grows quickly in warm conditions. Depending on soil and climate, it can grow anywhere from about half a meter to more than two meters in height. The stem is firm and upright, with many side branches as the plant matures. The leaves change as the plant grows. Lower leaves are large, rough, and deeply cut, while the upper leaves are smaller and smoother. During the flowering season, the plant produces small yellow flowers in loose clusters. These later turn into short pods that stay close to the stem. Each pod holds very small round seeds that are dark brown to black in color. Black mustard originally comes from regions around the Mediterranean and parts of Western Asia. Over time, it spread to many parts of the world. Today, it is widely grown in India, especially in regions with a warm climate.

Healthcare Perspective
In Ayurveda, black mustard is known as Rajika or Kali Sarson. It is described as hot in nature and sharp in taste. Because of this, it is mainly used in situations where the body feels cold, heavy, or sluggish. Traditionally, it is used to balance Kapha and Vata. Mustard seeds are believed to help wake up digestion and improve circulation. In many traditional practices, the seeds are not taken internally but used on the body. Ground mustard is applied as a paste on joints or muscles to create warmth and relieve stiffness. Mustard oil is also commonly used for chest massage or steam inhalation, especially in cold weather, to help clear congestion. In Unani medicine, black mustard is valued for supporting appetite and fluid balance. It has also been used in traditional remedies for skin care because of its naturally cleansing and stimulating properties.

Phytochemical Composition
Black mustard seeds contain natural compounds that give them their strong smell and heat. The most important of these is sinigrin. When the seeds are crushed and mixed with water, sinigrin changes into another compound that creates the familiar sharp mustard effect. The seeds are also rich in oil. A large portion of the seed is made up of fixed oils, which include fatty acids such as erucic acid. Along with this, the seeds contain plant antioxidants like phenolic compounds and flavonoids. Nutritionally, black mustard seeds provide protein and minerals such as magnesium and selenium. Small amounts of vitamins are also present. Together, these natural components explain why black mustard has remained important in traditional food and health practices for centuries.
