Plant Profile
Alpinia galanga, commonly known as Greater Galangal or Kulanjan, is a strong perennial herb. It belongs to the ginger family, Zingiberaceae. The plant usually grows in dense clumps and reaches a height of about 2 to 3.5 meters. It has large, leathery leaves that are long and oval in shape. A key feature of the plant is its underground rhizome. The rhizomes grow horizontally and are firm and fibrous. They have a pale yellow to light red outer surface and release a sharp, citrus-like aroma when cut. Alpinia galanga is mainly found across South and Southeast Asia. In India, it is widely grown in the North-Eastern and Southern regions. The plant grows best in warm, humid tropical climates.

Healthcare Perspective
In Ayurveda, Alpinia galanga is known as Kulanjan or Mahabhari Vacha. It is traditionally used to calm Vata and reduce excess Kapha. The rhizome is classified as a Deepana, meaning it helps stimulate digestion, and as a Ruchya, meaning it enhances taste. It is commonly added to digestive formulations to support appetite and digestive comfort. In traditional medicine, the rhizome is valued for its warming and aromatic nature. Because of this, it is often used in remedies for respiratory discomfort, especially to help clear excess phlegm. The plant is also known for its Svarya quality, which means it supports the voice. Chewing the rhizome has long been practiced to help improve vocal clarity.

Phytochemical Composition
Alpinia galanga has a well-studied chemical profile. It contains high levels of phenylpropanoids and volatile essential oils. One of the most researched compounds is 1′-acetoxychavicol acetate (ACA). The plant also contains several flavonoids, including galangin, kaempferol, and quercetin. Its strong aroma comes from essential oil components such as 1,8-cineole, alpha-pinene, eugenol, and methyl cinnamate. Together, these compounds give the plant its characteristic scent and flavor. They are also the focus of ongoing research for their potential biological activity.
